Open Ended Straight Draws at the Turn

Open ended straight draws are far easier to play at the turn.

You are generally in the situation to call and see the river card.

In some situations, you may not have the odds to make the call worthwhile and should fold.

Seldom are there situations where you wish to raise with these draws.

Seeing a Cheap River

With one card to come...

Your Cards

    The Board:

Multipy 8 (outs) by 2.2 and you about an 18% chance of hitting the straight.

So with less than a 20% chance to win, you need a pot that is approximately five times the size of your call. (You can work this out using Tilted Donkey's Pot Size Rule.) However, you may make a nice additional profit if you hit your straight, so....

Rule of Thumb: Call at the turn only if the pot is over four times the size of the amount you need to call. Otherwise, fold. (If the board is paired or shows three of a single suit, be more likely to fold unless the pot is very large relative to the size of your call.)

Rule of Thumb: Never raise an open straight draw at the turn. The only exception would be if the board is not paired, no flush is currently possible, and you (somehow) have greater than five callers!
