Texas Holdem: Gutshot Straight Draws at the Turn and The Idiot's End
Open Ended Straight Draws at the Turn
|
Gutshot Straight Draws at the Turn Rule of Thumb: Fold your gutshot draws. Exceptions would be if the board is not paired and the pot is enormous, ten times the size of the call or more. This is especially true if you also have overcards or a backdoor nut flush draw.
The Idiot's End Throughout our discussion of straights we didn't mention all straight draws are NOT created equally. For example, don't draw to the Idiot's end of a straight, that is the low end.
If a Ten falls then any Jack makes the high straight and your hand is beat! If a Five falls, you could still be beat by a Ten-Jack. So this "open ended" draw can be even worse than a gutshot! So always be aware of your draw and how strong your hand will be when you hit it! If you are drawing to something which is easily second best, only pay to peel off a card if the pot is so big you are justified.
