Open-Ended Straight Draws
Count of the cards that will make the straight: There are eight helpful cards left in the deck. Any of the four fives, or four tens will make the straight. Multiply eight (outs) by four and you have a 32% chance of hitting the straight.
Gut-Shot Straight Draws
Count of the cards that will make the straight: There are four helpful cards (the jacks) left in the deck. When we say "left in the deck" we mean unseen cards, actually; they could be in the deck or in somebody else's hand, it doesn't matter unless we've seen them...if we see one in somebody else's hand then we don't count them!). Multiply four (outs) by four and you have a 16% chance of hitting the straight.
A Set (three of a kind)
Count of the cards that will make the set: There are two helpful cards left in the deck (the other two nines). Multiply two (outs) by four which equals an 8% chance of hitting the set by the river.
One Pair (excluding a board pair)
Count of the cards that will make one pair (the remaining kings and aces): There are six helpful cards left in the deck. Multiply six (outs) by four which equals a 24% chance of hitting top pair by the river. Etc. You can figure out the odds of any card or cards coming. Carefully count the cards that can help you and multiply it by four! It beats memorizing a bunch of charts. Count your outs then multiply! |
